del.icio.us vs. ma.gnolia.com

  • Me: so i was wondering if i could get your account for why you say ma.gnolia is "more social"
  • Me: and what it is about it that you personally like more than del.icio.us
  • Me: if you dont mind sharing
  • Lisa McMillan: not at all. it has the same functionality of delicious, except that it also allows for discussion in the groups, rating the bookmarks, thanking for the bookmarks, and has what appears to be a more active development (more features more regularly)
  • Me: what is the value you get out of ma.gnolia as a service?
  • Lisa McMillan: and, it's audience seems to be more my crowd
  • Lisa McMillan: define value
  • Lisa McMillan: as opposed to delicious?
  • Me: if you were to sum up what it is that you personally get out of using the site what would you say
  • Me: on its own not related to del.icio.us
  • Lisa McMillan: it has a stronger community. i get just as much from my contacts as i do from myself
  • Me: yes, but deep down what do you "get"
  • Lisa McMillan: resources
  • Lisa McMillan: links to the most current articles
  • Lisa McMillan: recommendations
  • Me: so do you use it primarily through the website then?
  • Lisa McMillan: ya, i was actually just thinking about getting into their api last night
  • Lisa McMillan: i bet delicious is more robust there
  • Lisa McMillan: haven't had a blog in so long, haven't needed it
  • Lisa McMillan: however, I do think the feed is better - screenshots, rating, etc
  • Me: i ask because i've been reading a few articles by Bokardo (at the top here: http://del.icio.us/zachhale)
  • Lisa McMillan: ya, i've read that a few times
  • Me: really?
  • Me: do the ratings really tempt you one way or another?
  • Lisa McMillan: from the right people, ya they do
  • Lisa McMillan: not everyone uses them
  • Me: interesting
  • Lisa McMillan: so for example, if factoryjoe rates something i'm interested
  • Me: does ma.gnolia have a feature to tag each bookmark with a list of users whom you would personally recommend the article to?
  • Lisa McMillan: there's a 'send to' group or contact feature, ya
  • Me: do yo uuse it?
  • Lisa McMillan: not as much as i should, but that's about to change. i'm working on doing more of that now that i'm a 'featured linker' and i'm getting my blog back online
  • Me: haha
  • Me: i'm trying to do the same, make better use of social bookmarking and get my blog back online
  • Lisa McMillan: my brain doesn't really work at more than 140 characters at a time right now. trying to fix that
  • Lisa McMillan: ;)
  • Me: hehe
  • Me: twitter is amazing, isnt it?
  • Lisa McMillan: no kidding
  • Me: i had no idea what i was getting into
  • Lisa McMillan: between twitter, facebook and tumblr i'm running out of free time
  • Me: what's your tumblr?
  • Lisa McMillan: lisamac!
  • Lisa McMillan: http://lisamac.tumblr.com
  • Me: found it
  • Me: i finally had an epiphany and realized that tumblelog is a whole medium in itself and not a stream of content of mine like i had been using it before. removed all my feeds and i'm starting to use it as a twitter < tumblr < blog space
  • Me: like it should be used
  • Me: i'm http://tumble.zachhale.com
  • Lisa McMillan: i've been following you for a while :)
  • Me: i asked about ma.gnolia because i can't seem to see with all of the reasons I can come up that del.icio.us provides me value that ma.gnolia does it in any way better or easier
  • Me: haha oh. :)
  • Me: i have to thank you for your crazy flickr app installing madness though
  • Lisa McMillan: hahah
  • Me: most the apps i try are ones i see you try through my news feed
  • Lisa McMillan: awesome! i get most of mine from factoryjoe, so we're all in it together :)
  • Me: heh
  • Me: i try to keep my profile as lean as possible but i've still got tons of crap
  • Lisa McMillan: amen to that
  • Me: and i cant come to remove my lolcat ...
  • Me: so you just feed everything into tumblr through feeds, huh?
  • Lisa McMillan: lol i have it hiding in my apps, but not on my profile
  • Lisa McMillan: yup
  • Lisa McMillan: everything except twitter and lastfm, cuz it would be too big
  • Me: i just removed auto-feeding like that
  • Me: merlin's tumblr turned me away from that sort of activity
  • Lisa McMillan: oh ya?
  • Me: i made http://stream.zachhale.com for all my streaming needs
  • Lisa McMillan: ya i saw that
  • Lisa McMillan: i just think its nice to be able to point people to everything i think is cool in one place. let me know if it feels like too much k?
  • Me: okay i'll test it out. i just added it to nnw
  • Lisa McMillan: sweet! thanks
  • Lisa McMillan: you'll probably find you can stop watching anything else of mine now
  • Me: exactly
  • Lisa McMillan: sucks for stats
  • Lisa McMillan: for me
  • Lisa McMillan: i wonder if i could put ganalytics on it
  • Lisa McMillan: hm
  • Me: yeah you can!
  • Me: i run mine through feedburner too
  • Lisa McMillan: interesting
  • Lisa McMillan: k
  • Lisa McMillan: smartie
  • Me: :)
  • Me: i was asking all of those questions about ma.gnolia because i'm just completely blown away by del.icio.us and it's slick implementation of everything that I'm trying to see what it is about ma.gnolia that makes people turn
  • Lisa McMillan: i was a HUGE delicious fanboy. Ma.gnolia is really worth looking at. I think if all the people I follow hadn't switched, i might have stuck around. When it's community driven, it's hard not to follow people to the app. Oh! and the facebook ma.gnolia app is WAY better
  • Me: i know i'm being pessimistic but I can't but think that people join it just because it's the "cool guy" in the social bookmarking space regardless of what it actually provides them out of the application. Well, that and the screenshots.
  • Me: i just havent seen what it is ...
  • Lisa McMillan: it really is a preference
  • Lisa McMillan: i think if i felt like yahoo was doing more with delicious i'd be more inclined to look again
  • Me: the user profile is more of the focus on ma.gnolia so it feels a lot more like other social networking sites ... which is an interesting distinct difference it has
  • Lisa McMillan: and i likely will
  • Lisa McMillan: definitely
  • Me: but i don't see the user profile as even the smallest bit of something I'd use or can envision using since not only are they inefficient with how many bookmarks are shown but I get everything from rss anyways
  • Lisa McMillan: i hear that. the thing that you lose in rss is the connections other people are making
  • Me: what are these connections you speak of? just friendships through the social networking aspect of the site?
  • Lisa McMillan: yup
  • Lisa McMillan: i'm a big geek that way
  • Lisa McMillan: it's how i have these huge contact lists
  • Lisa McMillan: i pay attention to who other people are following
  • Me: hmm
  • Lisa McMillan: and oddly, i'm living more in the browser than the feedreader these days
  • Lisa McMillan: twitter gives me a LOT of what i'd get in nnw
  • Lisa McMillan: if and only if i have the right people in my list
  • Me: yeah... which is sometimes a frustrating over-duplication
  • Lisa McMillan: exactly
  • Me: do you use magnolia as more of a publish this as a content stream here and now or more as a place you come back to to re-reference things?
  • Lisa McMillan: both
  • Lisa McMillan: started as publishing
  • Lisa McMillan: but i've found myself searching lately
  • Me: yeah, see i've been using del.icio.us for a long time and only the last 5 months or so have I started to appreciate the re-finding features. it's kind of weird how drastic the value-adds change for me now
  • Lisa McMillan: ya. and i'll tell ya. i REALLY miss the firefox plugin / syncing with delicious. But I'm on safari now so I would have lost it nayway
  • Lisa McMillan: anyway
  • Lisa McMillan: not nayway gah
  • Me: yeah and that's the thing. now that i'm more of a re-finder user of del.icio.us i appreciate it's great tools like the firefox plugins
  • Me: i'm ranting ... haha
  • Lisa McMillan: ya, it was a decision i made. The one thing keeping me from switching from firefox to safari was that plugin. But when i found magnolia, i thought i'd try it for a week. And when i did, i loved it.
  • Lisa McMillan: didn't feel like i was missing anything
  • Me: well thanks for sharing your thoughts :)
  • Lisa McMillan: any time at all
  • Lisa McMillan: :)
  • Me: these are interesting discussions
  • Lisa McMillan: see, if we had viable blogs, we could do this publicly ;)
  • Me: may i publish this on tumblr?
  • Lisa McMillan: by all means
  • Me: i figure why not
  • Lisa McMillan: do it!
  • Me: that's what it's for!
  • Lisa McMillan: totally
